Conscious Movement
Conscious Body Quotes (PDF of the handout)
We discussed the role of the body in coming to a greater quality of presence and awareness. Spent some time reviewing the evolutionary history that has culminated in our physical bodies. I guided us in a meditation of Cradling, inviting appreciation of the complex and intricate nature of just our hands. We also took some time to sink into the weight of our bodies, allowing the sensation of fullness to become a grounding reference point for holding consciousness in the body.
I demonstrated a brief session of Authentic Movement, an embodiment practice intended to facilitate greater kinaesthetic awareness. Becoming comfortable in our bodies and in movement without the need to interpret or control our movement evokes a childlike presence, a way of letting the body be just what it is without mental overlays.
We discussed the developmental patterns that infants go through on their way to becoming upright. And further, how the journey to greater vertical alignment is illustrated in our broader evolutionary journey and is accompanied by concurrent brain development.
Respectfully submitted,
Elizabeth Russell
